Almost six years have passed since we welcomed our first Fila in our home. However, it seems like it was only yesterday when we first saw Xena, a beautiful black female puppy shyly wagging her tail, and telling us with the speechless language of love that she had “officially accepted us” as her parents.

Xena was growing happy and strong, but we could tell that she needed company, so we decided to give her a playmate, so six months after Xena’s arrival, the “stork” dropped off a handsome Fila. He was so brave and dignified even at his tender age; therefore we named him, “Apache.”

Although Xena has always been the boss, she and Apache got along just fine, they were buddies. A couple of years have passed and suddenly we realized that they were falling in love, our young babies had become adults and it was time for them to start a family of their own.

Xena and Apache have had 3 litters together. From the second litter we keep a big pup which we named Puma, why him out of all the pups?

Believe it or not, we think Puma was attached to us even before he was born. He was deaf and blind when he used to crawl toward us whenever his wonderful sense of smell told him we were approaching the puppies’ room. Puma was just a few days old, but he would rather be with us than his “birth mother” and his littermates.

Yes, Puma was one the biggest puppies of his litter, but it was not his size what made us to decide to keep him. It was the love that he gave us from the moment he was born. It was not love at first sight because he could not see us for the initial 10 days of his life, perhaps it was love at “first scent” or just an indescribable connection that started when he was still floating in the comfortable world inside of Xena’s tummy.

Our 3 Filas were raised the same way. However, just as it happens with children from the same parents, they have personalities of their own. Apache is serious and the most devoted friend we could ever imagine. Xena is an independent spirit, brave and always ready to protect her property. Puma at 2 and a half years old, is still a playful baby Fila, the clown that always puts a smile on our faces.

It is hard to imagine our lives without the companionship of our dogs. In a world filled with egoism, our home is an oasis of sincere Fila love, and we have to agree with that famous saying: “the more I know human beings, the more I love my dogs,”… our Fila dogs.
